October 27, 2007 --
BRAVO Carlos Perez for  an outstanding first concert of the 2007/2008 season! The concert was co-sponsored by Springfield classical concert guitarist Russel Brazzel who personally underwrote the cost of bringing this elegant, thrilling master to Springfield. Look for reviews of three Carlos Perez CD's coming soon to this web site. Pictures from the concert are prsented below.

January  19, 2008 -- Paul Henry, assisted by Arturo Guzman
Paul is one of the most popular performers to have graced us with he talent. He is on the faculty of the Music Conservatory at Roosevelt University in Chicago and has recorded several CDs. His January 19 concert was attended by many, despite the frigid 4 degree (Fahrenheit) chill outside. Arturo Guzman, a guitar student of Henry, performed with him, concluding each half (pre- and post-intermission) of the concert and contributed well to the success of the event. Pictures from the evening are posted below.

BRAVO Julie Goldberg for her most engaging and virtuoso performance February 16!
Julie was named "Glassical Guitarist of the Year" for 2002 by Classical Guitar Alive, the internationally acclaimed radio program. Her Saturday night concert demonstrated why. Picturs from this memorable encounter are posted below.

KUDOS toApril 12, 2008 Chanson Du Soir: David Isaacs, guitar; Chelsea Camille, soprano for their memorable April 12, 2008 concert! Pictures are posted below. Look for a link to my review of their fine CD "Melancholie et Espoir"
soon.

PICTURES from the 2007/2008 concert season follow the chronological listing of concert dates and artists in reverse order with the exceedingly harmonious Chanson Du Soir at the top and going backwards to Carlos Perez' most marvelously memorable tour de talent.

February 16, 2008 was foggy and rainy in downtown Springfield,
but inside First Presyterian Church, the sun shone brightly as SCGS presented
Julie Goldberg in concert

jg2083.jpg (99901 bytes)
1. Julie was the first classical guitarist I photographed when I started attending SCGS concerts with camer in hand.  Pictures from her earlier appearance are posted elsewhere here. Look for the link above.

2. Unlike that first encounter, on February 16, I met her before she began her warm-up.   Without the audience behind me, I was able to cover a lot of territory as I photographed her pre-concert.

To be remembered well and long -- Carlos Perez -- October 27, 2007
In what may have been the most stunningly virtuosic performance ever played in an SCGS concert at First Presbyterian Church, this master from Chile won an almost spontaneous new legion of devoted fans. His range of intensity and mood, technique that seemed to require more fingers than the number most mortals have at the end of their arms and lightning fast exterity still echo happily in the memories of those privileged to be in the audience October 27! Bravissimo Carlos! Encore! Encore!

sc102.jpg (115708 bytes)
1. When the guest of honor is warming up, usually about half an hour before the concert begins, I have been permitted to take photograpns.
sc101.jpg (134169 bytes)
2. These first nine pictures were taken then, intruding fewer than five minutes during this critical time for the performer.
sc103.jpg (118425 bytes)
3. During the warmup, he or she hears the sound of the guitar in the First Presbyterian sanctuary for the first time unless it's a return engagement.
sc104.jpg (143766 bytes)
4. Classical guitarists from all over the world, brought to Springfield to play in concert by Springfield Classical Guitar Society, are unanimous in their appreciation of the acoustics of "the hall" which allow audience members in the rear of the sanctuary to hear, very well,  the notes of nuances of the instrument.
sc105.jpg (135050 bytes)
5. The "sound" in the room also allows the performer to hear the precise sound generated by talented hands on strings and frets. This gives the performers great confidence and thus the audience a great performance.

The Whole World in His Hands (has P.H.)

Of course, it begins with nimble
fingers and a soul for knowing
what each note evokes as first tones
roll wholly through the cathedral
beginning as a familiar tune
but then
where church walls had been, begin
exotic Latin streets in a romantic night,
cobbles lit from an occasional pitch
of amber light from open doors
and porticos, crossed by shadows
of weary revelers heading for a bed
guided by moonglow and amour
but then
slow strolls through rich orchards,
damp air hanging with blooms and musks
of foreign dusts, entwined companions
in a ripening world, listening
to distant titterings of couples
coupling covertly in the far copse,
each branch breathing sighs
of relief in the light dew of new dawn
and then
shady siestas in mid day steams
idle dog dreams and happy fish in calm streams,
loafing toes o sweet-moss stones,
carnal lips slip from a cold cider cup
to the shoulder of a lover, becoming
in a slow shimmer chapel architecture
only when
last chords leave the building
only then.
